Muscle and Joint Pain

Pain affects more individuals than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. One in five adults suffer from chronic pain, and a growing number of children are affected by pain – often in the form of headaches and stomachaches. For both adults and children, the pain is often severe enough that it interferes with work/school, socialization and physical activity.

Despite the prevalence of pain, research continues to document suboptimal pain management for the majority of sufferers. Unmanaged pain compromises the immune system, slows healing and repair, and can even promote the risk of cancer.

Although sometimes necessary, pharmaceutical medications in the form of painkillers or steroids, reduce pain by masking the underlying issue. Despite temporary relief, studies show that long-term use of some of these painkillers could actually weaken joints, exacerbating pain in the long term.

Many over-the-counter, natural products, purchased at health food stores or pharmacies have not undergone standardized testing which assures consumers that the therapeutic ingredients match what is listed on the label in potency and purity. Therefore, the efficacy of these vitamins and herbs can vary greatly depending on the quality of the manufacturing. All the professional supplements prescribed by Naturopathic Doctors have undergone rigorous quality control. These supplements are therefore more effective at bringing symptoms relief.
Mindfulness based techniques for pain management:
Chronic pain can be frustrating and debilitating, therefore it is only normal to physically and emotionally ‘resist it’ when it arises. A technique called Mindfulness is a highly effective practice for chronic pain because it helps the sufferer work with pain from a totally different and more effective vantage point. This technique is readily taught at Health Momentum.
Nutritional Counselling:
The anti-inflammatory diet outlines key foods that can help your body return to optimal health. This diet will provide the individual with ample vitamins, essential fatty acids and dietary fibre, needed to reduce inflammation and chronic pain.
Increases various “feel good” endorphins in the body. Endorphins help to control pain and speed up healing.


As bones are realigned and muscle tension is released, the nerves of the body are freed of any tension or compression caused by this misalignment. This also ensures the typical pain signals associated with constant compression no longer need to occur, leading the body to be pain free.

The therapeutic deep release, that occurs during massage, benefits the body on many different levels. Massage helps to break down muscle tension, calcifications or scar tissue that might be at the root of physical discomfort. Massage also goes beyond simple muscle relaxation and increases blood flow, lymphatic drainage and toxin removal.
