Chronic Pain Syndromes (Fibromyalgia)

Acute pain is a normal signal from the body alerting us to a problem that needs to be addressed. Chronic pain, however, is a much more complex illness that requires a multifaceted approach to healing. Chronic pain occurs when ‘pain signals’ within the body, keep firing in the nervous system, even when the pain stimulus is long gone. This condition is often referred to as Chronic Pain Syndromes or Fibromyalgia. People with Fibromyalgia frequently hurt all over and often feel totally worn out. The symptoms can be so severe that they are forced to limit daily activities, which once gave them much pleasure.

Symptoms

  • Headaches
  • Low back pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Arthritic pain
  • Neurogenic pain (pain resulting from damage to the nerves)

Approach

There are frequent misunderstandings surrounding fibromyalgia. This can make it hard to find adequate emotional support and appropriate medical care. The pain experts at Health Momentum offer compassionate and effective support for individuals suffering from fibromyalgia or other chronic pain syndromes. Regular massage, osteopathic treatments, lifestyle changes, nutritional counselling and mindfulness based techniques are paramount for proper recovery.

Solutions

Naturopathic Medicine

Acupuncture: In a healthy person, energy moves freely throughout energy channels called “meridians” in the body. In the ill person, these channels become blocked. Acupuncture works to restore health by improving the natural flow and balance among these pathways.
Anti-inflammatory herbs/vitamins: Professionally prescribed natural supplements can be very effective for reducing pain and inflammation in the muscles and joints of the body.
Mindfulness based techniques on pain management: Mindfulness meditation promotes awareness, decreases repetitive and unproductive thoughts and enhances overall capacity for healing.  It is a highly effective practice for chronic pain because it helps the sufferer work with pain from a totally different and more effective vantage point.
Diet and Nutrition: Good nutrition is the foundation for all health concerns and lasting wellness. What we put into our bodies on a regular basis provides the building blocks for our cells and tissues.  The naturopathic doctors at Health Momentum can create a menu plan that is realistic and enjoyable for any busy schedule.

Osteopathy

Internal Organ Corrections (Visceral Manipulation): By working on the various internal organs of the body (such as intestines, lungs, kidney, etc.) the osteopathic practitioner is able to assess if poor positioning of the organ may be contributing to chronic pain if the organ isn’t able to function at its optimal level.
Cranial-sacral: The cranial-sacral approach focuses on both the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (restoration and relaxation) nervous systems of the body. The practitioner works to bring down the functioning of the sympathetic system in order for the parasympathetic system to take over. In turn, this helps to decrease the sensations of pain felt by the individual, as well as helps to bring a sense of peace, ease and relaxation to an otherwise overactive system.

Registered Massage Therapy

The therapeutic deep release, that occurs during massage, benefits the body on many different levels.  Massage helps to break down muscle tension, calcifications or scar tissue that might be at the root of physical discomfort.  Massage also goes beyond simple muscle relaxation and increases blood flow, lymphatic drainage and toxin removal.
