Osteoporosis

At least 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will suffer from an osteoporotic fracture during their lifetime. The cost to the Canadian health care system of treating osteoporosis and fractures is estimated to be a staggering $1.9 billion annually! This is where naturopathic doctors have the power to make a difference not only in our patients’ lives but also in our health care system.

Osteoporosis is condition in which the bones become porous and brittle promoting the risk of fracture. If you’re gotten a bone mineral density (BMD) scan, it will tell you how much your bones have degraded compared to the average young adult. Without the scan, there is no real way of knowing how your bones are doing until it’s too late and a fracture occurs.

The cause of osteoporosis is multifactorial but often includes hormone imbalances (often a decrease in estrogen, or a parathyroid hormone problem), vitamin K2 deficiency, an acidic diet and lack of exercise.

Approach

Even if you don’t have osteoporosis or osteopenia (early onset of osteoporosis), there’s a lot that can be done to prevent it especially if you have family members that have osteoporosis.  At Health Momentum your bone mineral density (BMD) scan, blood work, family history and hormonal balance is assessed.

Solutions

Naturopathic Medicine

Bone Building Multi-mineral supplements: All natural supplements prescribed by Naturopathic Doctors have been third party tested and are therefore guaranteed for their purity and improved efficacy.
Correction of nutritional deficiencies:  Good nutrition is the foundation for health and lasting wellness. What we put into our bodies on a regular basis provides the building blocks for our cells and tissues.  A cancer fighting diet will be discussed and realistic dietary suggestions will be made to suit your goals and needs.
Hormone balancing: As we get older, our hormone levels decline, causing a reduction in energy, mood, sex drive and memory.  Low hormones also frequently lead to insomnia and impaired ability to lose weight. Bio-identical hormone therapy replaces the necessary hormones that your body is now producing at a slower rate, returning your body to optimal health.
Personalized exercise regime: Exercise does far more than just help you tone up—it can actually reduce and slow ageing inside and out of the body. Research shows that working out can help your brain, bones, heart, and skin look and act younger.
