Progesterone is the precursor of many estrogenic and androgenic hormones. It is also a precursor of cortisol and aldosterone.
Estrogen can retard the development of osteoporosis, but it does not reverse it. However, many clinical studies have shown that natural progesterone cream is more important than estrogen in preventing and treating osteoporosis (John R. Lee, Natural Progesterone).
Synthetic estrogens are associated with an increase in the incidence of breast and uterine cancer (after 5 years of ERT the relative risk of breast cancer increases 30% and after 10 years the increase is 50%). After discontinuation the risk is increased for as many years as treatment is continued.
However, natural progesterone does not appear to have the same serious side effects as synthetic estrogens. Natural progesterone may help prevent breast cancer and endometrial cancer and decrease the incidence of fibrocystic breast disease and ovarian cysts.
It reduces menopausal symptoms such as vaginal dryness and hot flashes and acts as an antidepressant.
Natural progesterone has beneficial effects in a number of endocrine problems:
_ Increased thyroid activity by enhancing the activity of thyroid hormone
_ Improved homeostasis of blood glucose levels
_ Reduction of deposition of adipose tissue, and increased thermogenic effect
